ALTERNATE REALITY GAMES

An ARG is a game that you play in real life. Rather than picking up a controller and sitting down by the TV, you play an ARG by living it. Some ARGs use emails, IM conversations, phone calls, or even live scenes to draw the player in and create a sense of total immersion.

Most of the stories I have worked on are single or 2-player adventures where the participants play starring roles. They take place primarily through live scenes, with some online interaction. Unlike many other ARGs, there are few or no puzzles to solve, and the player changes the story by their direct interaction with the other characters.

EVELYN OFFSCREEN
DIRECTOR/ WRITER

A beloved B-movie actress dies amid rumors that she had nearly discovered the secret to immortality. If her fans manage to bring her back to life – can they live with the consequences?

Evelyn Offscreen was a horror-themed ARG involving multiple live participants in Orlando, and online participants from around the world. Participants were encouraged to play different roles within the story, including family members, reporters, Hollywood talent, and fans of the deceased actress.

FRAMED
DIRECTOR OF VIRTUAL WORLDS

A retired art thief is called back in for one final mission. Will she salvage her reputation and save her crew, or will they all go to jail for a crime they didn’t commit?

Framed was an intense, one-person ARG adventure that took place live, all around Orlando, and online through virtual scenes. The story ended with our participant breaking into City Hall to return a stolen painting, and finally turning the tables on her arch-nemesis.

Framed was produced with assistance from Forterra, Inc. who provided the OLIVE virtual worlds system, and Planet Digital who provided a centralized performance location for our actors in virtual scenes.

THE VOICE
ART DIRECTOR

An intrepid reporter fights to ensure that every voice is heard in a 2-person ARG experience produced for the 2006 Florida Film Festival.

The Voice focused on two different participants on opposing sides of an issue – one trying to get to the heart of a story, and the other fighting to protect his boss’ reputation from the media.  During the film festival, people could follow along with our participants online through text and video that we updated each night. You can check out a full record of The Voice here.

For The Voice, I returned as Art Director. This time, we had the added challenge of tracking two different participants and making sure that each one had a real impact on the story.

THE GAME
ART DIRECTOR

An attorney stumbles into a spy-intrigue adventure, in which he must infiltrate a secret organization to rescue his girlfriend.

During the course of the story, our participant witnessed a kidnapping, caused his best friend’s death, broke into a secret website, and ultimately defeated the villain at a lavish gala event. The story ended with a kiss, and applause as the grand gala affair transformed into a casual after party.

The Game was my first project as an art director, and the Interactive Performance Lab’s first multi-day, city-wide interactive story.
